Alex Ching-Chen Liu

Alex Ching-Chen Liu (he/him) is a licensed architect in Taiwan and recently earned a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University GSAPP. He joined Beyer Blinder Belle in 2026 as an Architectural Designer.

He has a strong interest in adaptive reuse projects, an area he has continued to develop throughout his professional career. His work approaches architecture as an act of integration, designing to engage history, culture, and the built fabric of our cities.

Prior to joining BBB, he worked as a Senior Architectural Designer at JJP Architects + Planners, one of Taiwan's leading firms, contributing to projects including industrial adaptive reuse, office complexes, and university laboratory buildings. Besides architectural practice, he also continues to teach at Columbia University, actively engaging in architectural education and academic discourse.

Beyond architectural practice, he explores multimedia approaches to representing design ideas. Working across drawing, photography, publications, and installation, he continues to challenge conventional modes of architectural representation.

WILDLANDS: Stories From the Wildland Urban Interface

A nomadic framework for reading drawings.

After the final review, architectural drawings no longer retain their original ways of being read. This exhibition asks how they might be given a new spatial and collective reading. At AIA Los Angeles, the lack of clean walls, the high ceilings, and the need to temporarily relocate the installation during events became the starting points for the design.

In response, we developed a nomadic exhibition system using lightweight aluminum pipes and 3D-printed joints to create freestanding structures that stretch out the drawings almost like tents. Light and portable, the installation can fold, move, and unfold as the space changes. Its temporary and adaptable nature subtly echoes the instability and displacement caused by wildfire.
